STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern baseball team defeated College of Charleston 4-1 at J.I. Clements Stadium on Tuesday night. The Eagles now boast a 14-7 record as they head back into conference play this weekend.
College of Charleston got the scoring started in the top of the first inning, as Trotter Harlan shot an RBI double down the left field line, bringing Tyler Sorrentino home from first base to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The Eagles would respond in the bottom of the first, starting with a
Jesse Sherrill single to left field.
Jason Swan would follow it up with his 200
th career hit, a single up the middle, and finally
Noah Ledford would plate Sherrill with an RBI single up the middle.
Neither team would score again until the bottom of the fourth, where
Kyler Hultgren would knock an RBI single to right field, scoring
Noah Searcy from second to give the Eagles their first lead of the game, 2-1.
The game stayed locked at 2-1 until the bottom of the eighth inning, where the Eagles took advantage of the Cougars' miscues. Ledford would reach base from a dropped fly ball and scored Sherrill for a second time in the process. Searcy was intentionally walked after Luke Vaks threw two balls, and
Sam Blancato came to pinch run.
Austin Thompson was then hit by a pitch, scoring Swan, and giving the Eagles the 4-1 lead.
Jake Martin made quick work of the three batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning, collecting three ground ball outs to secure his first save of the season in a 4-1 Eagle victory.
