SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – A three-run 11
th inning helped power the Georgia Southern baseball team past the 10
th-ranked Texas State Bobcats, 7-4, on Friday night.
Texas State (23-8, 8-2 SBC) scored the first three runs, one run off a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning, and two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the first off, a solo home run, and one from an RBI single to score a Bobcat runner.
The Eagles (19-10, 7-3 SBC) were able to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning, when
Noah Searcy was walked with the bases loaded, plating
Kyler Hultgren and cutting into the Bobcats' lead, 3-1. In the top of the sixth inning,
Austin Thompson cranked a solo shot to left center field, only trailing 3-2 to Texas State. In the top of the ninth inning,
Christian Avant hit a solo home run to left center field to tie the game up at three all. The Bobcats would send the game to extra innings after grounding into a 163 double play.
In the top of the tenth inning, the
Jarrett Brown was walked to start the inning, and he promptly stole second. Brown advanced to third on a Thompson ground out, and scored on a
Sam Blancato ground out, giving the Eagles the 4-3 lead. The Bobcats would tie the game when a double play set up by the Eagles did not develop quick enough, letting the game-tying run score.
The 11
th inning saw the Eagles scored from an Avant dropped strikeout, which had him reach and score Sherrill, then Searcy's RBI single brought home Avant, and Brown's RBI single scored Searcy.
Ben Johnson pitched the Eagles through the final three outs and secured the win.
