Long Ball Propels Eagles over Mountaineers, 7-1, In SBC Quarterfinals

Georgia Southern advances to play Troy on Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Christian Avant's 3-for-4 day, including a three-run home run, was the catalyst for a 7-1 Sun Belt Championship Quarterfinal win over the App State Mountaineers on Friday, May 27, at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama.
 
Georgia Southern (39-17) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI-double from Avant, sending Swan home. The Eagles would get their second run of the inning from an App State (20-33) infield error, plating Avant.
 
App State would score one in the top of the second inning, and for the next few innings, the score would remain locked at 2-1. In the bottom of the fifth inning, with runners on first and second, Avant would crank a home run to left field, sending it out of Riverwalk Stadium and giving the Eagles a big 5-1 lead.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Parker Biederer would score two more runs for the Eagles with a two-run homer of his own to right field, scoring Blancato in the process and giving the Eagles the 7-1 lead.
 
Jay Thompson earned his seventh win of the season with three strong scoreless innings of work, coming in relief of Ty Fisher and only allowing a single hit in the process.
