13-Inning Walkoff Highlights Day Two Of Bash In The Boro

Eagles outlast Radford, 4-3, in 13 innings while also downing Bryant, 5-2, on Saturday

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern softball picked up another pair of wins in Saturday's action in the Bash in the Boro tournament, defeating Bryant, 5-2, before outlasting Radford, 4-3, in 13 innings.

In the other games from the tournament on Saturday, Bryant defeated LIU, 1-0, and LIU defeated Radford, 4-3.

The final day of the Bash in the Boro begins on Sunday with Bryant taking on Radford at 9 a.m., then the Eagles hosting LIU at 11:30 a.m.

GAME ONE: Georgia Southern 5, Bryant 2

Georgia Southern spotted a the Bulldogs two runs in the second, then scored five straight to collect a 5-2 win over Bryant in their first game of the day.

An error led to a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, then Faith Barth's RBI single capped a three-run frame to put the Eagles in front. Georgia Southern added insurance in the third with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kinley Stewart, then got an RBI single from Emma Davis in the bottom of the sixth.

Redshirt freshman Morgan Kendrick (1-0) entered the game in the fourth inning and notched the win with four innings of two-hit shutout ball, walking four while striking out five. Courtney Paolantonio (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up four hits and four runs - one earned - in three innings of work, striking out five.

Three Eagles had two hits in the contest - Barth, Davis and Dejah Mills.

GAME TWO: Georgia Southern 4, Radford 3 (13 inn.)

In just the third 13-inning game in school history, Georgia Southern freshman Emma Davis drove home Brooke Kell with a single down the left field line to earn the walk-off extra-inning victory.

The Eagles led, 2-0, after the second inning as Courtney Ball delivered an RBI single and Kinley Stewart notched a sacrifice fly.

The score stood 2-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Laura Thompson had a two-out, two-run single up the middle that tied the game at 2-all.

Georgia Southern starter Bailey Holland and Radford starter Malorie Reeves each kept hitters off the scoreboard until the 13th inning, when the international tiebreaker rule was instituted.

Radford's Emily Smith doubled home Cori McMillian to lead off the top of the 13th, but was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple. Holland got out of the inning, sending the Eagles to the bottom of the 13th trailing by one.

With Emily Greek placed on second base, Olivia Creamer moved the runner over on a sacrifice bunt. Greek then scored easily on a Kinley Stewart double to center field, tying the game at 3-all. A walk to Brooke Kell ended Reeves' day in the circle, then after a fielder's choice, Davis hit a 2-1 pitch just inside the third base line to score Kell with the winning run.

Holland earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the season, becoming only the third Georgia Southern pitcher to throw 13 innings in a game. She gave up 11 hits and three unearned runs, striking out a career-high eight batters. Reeves (0-1) took the loss for the Highlanders, giving up 16 hits and four runs - three earned - while walking three and striking out seven.

The game joins two others - a 6-5 win over Chattanooga on April 27, 2014, and a 3-2 loss to Jacksonville State on February 25, 2001 - as the longest fastpitch softball games in school history.

Emma Davis went 4-for-6 to lead the Eagles at the plate, while Stewart and Dejah Mills had three hits apiece. Faith Barth became the first Georgia Southern player to have seven at-bats in a game as she went 2-for-7.
