South Carolina Blanks Eagles, 3-0, On Wednesday

Gamecocks notch the victory in their first trip to Statesboro since 2013

STATESBORO - South Carolina notched a 3-0 win over host Georgia Southern on Wednesday night in its first trip to Statesboro since 2013.

The Gamecocks improved to 9-1 with the win, while Georgia Southern moved to 5-5. The Eagles will host the 2023 GATA Challenge on Friday through Sunday, February 24-26 as North Carolina A&T and Middle Tennessee come to Eagle Field for tournament action.

South Carolina opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning as Zoe Laneaux laced a double to right field, plating a pair for a 2-0 advantage.

Georgia Southern threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning as Katie Perkins and Brooke Kell each drew walks, giving the Eagles a pair of runners on with one out, but Donnie Gobourne recorded a strikeout, and after a single by Emma Davis, the Eagles' Chandler Caldwell was cut down at third base to end the inning.

The Gamecocks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a leadoff triple by Laneaux and an RBI groundout for a 3-0 lead.

Karsen Ochs (3-0) worked 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief to notch the win for the Gamecocks, while Gobourne hurled three innings of one-hit shutout ball, walking three while striking out seven for her third save of the season.

Bailey Holland (3-2) took the loss for the Eagles in the complete-game performance, giving up four hits and three runs in seven innings of work, walking one while striking out two.

Davis' two hits led the Eagles offensively on the night.
