Long ball makes the difference for the Eagles

STATESBORO - The 24th-ranked Georgia Southern baseball team defeated the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Sunday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium by a final score of 3-2.

Coastal Carolina (25-15-1, 13-7-1 SBC) got on the board first in the top of the second inning, but Georgia Southern (29-15, 15-6 SBC) responded in the bottom of the fourth with a big Austin Thompson two-run home run, bringing Jason Swan to the plate with him.

The Chanticleers would score one more in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 2-2, but Noah Ledford would crank the Eagles' second home run of the day over the right field wall, taking the lead at 3-2. Neither team would score again as Danny Madden hurled two hitless innings, striking out five to earn his first save of the season and preserve the win.

Anthony DiMola (1-0) earned his first win of the season with a four-inning outing, where he only allowed two hits, one run, and struck out two Chanticleer batters.

QUICK HITS

Austin Thompson tied Noah Ledford for most home runs on the team with 10 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Ledford would hit his team-leading 11th homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Jason Swan led the Eagles with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
The three Eagles pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts. Thomas Higgins had three, Anthony DiMola had two, and Danny Madden had five.
The Eagles only allowed two strikeouts to CCU.

The Eagles will host Troy for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series starting on May 6 at J.I. Clements Stadium. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
