Georgia Southern earns the first win over the Ospreys in Jacksonville since 1988
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern men's tennis picked up a huge road win on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the University of North Florida by a 4-2 score at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Eagles moved to 5-3 on the season with their first win over the Ospreys in Jacksonville since 1988. North Florida falls to 8-4 on the season with the loss.
Georgia Southern took a 1-0 lead in the match by collecting the key doubles point. Gregoire Delattre and Davis Taylor defeated Breno Marques and Andreas Scott, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles, while Matthew Mitchell and Albert Widell downed Joao Portugal and Jean Deloziere, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, UNF notched a win at No. 6 singles to tie the match up, but Widell delivered a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles to put the Eagles back in front. Taylor then notched a 7-5, 6-3, win at No. 4 singles. Leading by a 3-2 score and with both remaining matches in third sets, Edoardo Santoni came up with the match clincher in a tiebreaker, downing Marques 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) for the victory.
"Our team grew up a lot today," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said. "I'm super proud of how we came out and how we stuck together in the toughest moments. We're going to put in another tough day tomorrow and keep growing as a team."
Georgia Southern finishes its weekend in Florida on Sunday, taking on Stetson in a 2 p.m. matchup in DeLand, Fla.
